Hello Everyone! Hope this week's issue is valuable to some of you... For Athletes: Increase the Probability of SuccessWe like to think that if we put in the work, success will follow. But reality doesn't always play by those rules. The hardest worker doesn't always win. The team that does everything right can still fall short. The reality is that in some cases, someone seems to get the break with half the effort. It's frustrating, but the truth is that success isn't something we're owed; it's something we position ourselves for. Instead of asking, "Do I deserve success?" a better question might be, "Am I building the habits that increase the probability of success?" Action step of the week: Pick one small action that increases your odds of success and do it every day for 7 days. The goal isn’t to deserve success; it’s to build the behaviors that make success more likely. For Coaches: ConveyingOne of the best ways to build a relationship of trust with your players is to help them feel seen and understood. A simple strategy to do this is called conveying—a closed-loop technique in which you reflect your understanding of their situation or feelings. You’re not agreeing or disagreeing with what they are experiencing; you’re checking to see if you’re reading them right. There are two ways to do this: Intellectual conveying: Reflect the context or facts—“I understand you’re not getting the reps you want, could that be the source of your frustration?" Emotional conveying: Reflect how they might feel — “I imagine it's frustrating not to see the results despite all the effort you're putting in. Is that safe to say?” Then you pause and let them respond. That’s when they clarify what’s actually going on. And once you understand their reality, you can coach them more effectively. Conveying helps players feel valued, opens the door to honest communication, and puts you in the best position to lead. Action step of the week: Choose one athlete or assistant coach and practice conveying during your next conversation. Convey to them what you think their situation (intellectual conveying) or feelings (emotional conveying). Then pause and let them correct or confirm what you said. The goal isn’t to be right. The goal is to understand. Do this once a day this week and watch how quickly trust and clarity improve. For Parents: Praise + CuriosityA simple way to help your child compound success is to praise, then be curious. Praise alone feels good, but praise followed by curiosity helps your child understand why they succeeded. You can help them highlight the repeatable habits, decisions, and behaviors that led to their success. Instead of stopping at “Good job,” add a question that helps them reflect. For example: “You had a great attitude today. What did you do differently to have such a noticeable change?” When you combine praise with curiosity, you teach your child to notice their process rather than just the outcome. It strengthens your relationship with each other, builds self-confidence, and helps them learn how to repeat their success. Action step of the week: The next time you praise your child, follow it with a curiosity question. Keep it simple: “You did [insert behavior] really well today. What helped you do that?” The more you do this, the more you may notice your child becoming more aware of their effort, attitude, and habits. Announcement: I'd love to support you, coaches! Hey Everyone! Hope these are helpful... The Juggler If I were to put a caption on this photo, it would be this: "People praise you in public for what you practice in private." The lessons embedded in this drawing are many, but here are some of my favorites: The best don't just practice until they get it right; they practice until they can't get it wrong: Stable skills hold up under pressure. The only way those skills can be forged is through hours and hours of purposeful practice. Embrace the...
Hey Everyone, Hope you had a great Thanksgiving celebration last week! There has been a huge uptick in my work with clients around discovering and developing their unique competitive advantage. Here are five that have come up recently: A love for your craft There is power in loving what you do—the process, the work, the climb. You have to love it because you’ll experience heartbreak along the way. You’ll go through slumps. Things will be unfair at times. And when those things happen, your...
