IYI Newsletter: endure + care + tea

Hi Everyone!

Here are the principles that came up with my clients in professional sports this past week. I hope they help in some way!

For Athletes: Endure

Just because it feels like nothing's happening doesn't mean you're not growing.
Some of the most important development happens in the plateaus—the stretch of time where the needle doesn't move.
When it feels like your effort isn't being rewarded, stay faithful to the process.
What looks like stagnation is often a setup for a breakthrough.

Action step of the week: Remind yourself why you are willing to sacrifice as much as you are. Sometimes we need to reconnect to the reason we started in the first place.

For Coaches: Care

A mistake coaches often make is assuming players are listening just because they're talking.

They're not.

People only tune in to what feels relevant to them. If your message doesn't touch their goals, fears, or motivations, it won't stick, no matter how passionate or well-meaning you are.

Every player filters information. They pay attention to what matters and ignore what doesn't. If you're not speaking into their world, you're just background noise.

Take the time to learn what drives them by asking what they care about. Pay attention to what fires them up, then speak to that.

Two keys to connection are what you say and when you say it. Timing matters. Before a game, after a tough loss, in the heat of emotion, or in calm, your message will land differently depending on when you deliver it.

They say you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. That's true, but you can salt the oats.

So salt the oats by not just talking, but connecting. Speak in a way that makes them want to listen.

Action step of the week: Try to get to know your players on a deeper level this week so that you will know how to speak to them in a way they will care.

For Parents: T.E.A.

As a parent, your most valuable resources are your time, energy, and attention; all three have limited capacity.

It's easy to become overwhelmed as the leader of your household. You have many things scheduled, chase every detail, and before you know it, you're reacting instead of creating.

It reminds me of the 10-out glass cup analogy. A 10-ounce glass cup can only hold 10 ounces of water, no matter how much you pour into it.

That glass represents your capacity. Whether it's your attention, your time, or your energy, you can only fit what you have. And whatever fills that space impacts how you show up.

Time is prone to getting hijacked by urgency and other people's agendas. Energy drains from tasks you don't need to be doing.

The things you decide to put into your cup don't just stay with you; you can pour them into your family.

So ask yourself: Am I filling my cup by design or by default?

Action step of the week: Be mindful of where you direct your attention, how you manage your energy, and where you spend your time.

Hey Everyone! Hope these are helpful... The Juggler If I were to put a caption on this photo, it would be this: "People praise you in public for what you practice in private." The lessons embedded in this drawing are many, but here are some of my favorites: The best don't just practice until they get it right; they practice until they can't get it wrong: Stable skills hold up under pressure. The only way those skills can be forged is through hours and hours of purposeful practice. Embrace the...

Hey Everyone, Hope you had a great Thanksgiving celebration last week! There has been a huge uptick in my work with clients around discovering and developing their unique competitive advantage. Here are five that have come up recently: A love for your craft There is power in loving what you do—the process, the work, the climb. You have to love it because you’ll experience heartbreak along the way. You’ll go through slumps. Things will be unfair at times. And when those things happen, your...

Happy Monday! I'm taking a different approach this week. I often have conversations, experiences, and problems that others can learn from. I'm going to start sharing them with you all here.
